Kids Dentist in Burlington & Mississauga
Children’s dentistry primarily involves the treatment and maintenance of erupting teeth, whether this means deciduous (baby teeth) or permanent (adult teeth). Caring for your child’s oral health starts at a very young age. From the eruption of the first baby tooth at approximately 6 months old. At this early age, the parents should make sure they are brushing their infant’s teeth daily in order to develop a brushing habit. It is important to know that the earlier you start the easier it is to form a brushing habit.
Your child’s teeth will develop in 3 stages. Deciduous dentition, which is from 6 months of age to 6 years of age. At this stage your child will only develop baby teeth. Mixed dention stage develops from 6 years to approximately 13 years. At this stage, children have a combination of baby and permanent teeth. The 3rd and final stage is permanent dention which grow from ages 13 years and up.
The goal of children dentistry is typically to prevent any disease affecting the oral cavity (teeth, gums and oral structures) or treat and correct any problems that may occur.
Prevention start by regular checkups, cleaning, fluoride application, pits and fissure sealing and hygiene instructions. By practicing these prevention methods, we can maintain and promote your child’s oral health and help them learn how to take care of their teeth.
Monitoring the correct eruption sequence of teeth and making sure the permanent teeth have the sufficient space to erupt normally is very important as it eliminates future problems like crowding and the need to straightening teeth with the use of braces.
Detection of any abnormal habits like thumb sucking, mouth breathing, tongue thrusting, bottle nursing and early clinical interception is a crucial part of your child’s healthy mouth.
Treating any decay or cavities (sugar bugs as described to children) as soon as possible. This is done by placing filings in affected teeth. This may prevent the need of special nerve treatment (pulpotomy, pulpectomy) and/or stainless steel crowns.
